Introducing:

MUSIC TEACHES READING

More than just a great reading supplement.

After a few decades of Suzuki teaching, I created The Family String Method to package Suzuki principles in a form that would work in the world of mainstream string education. Alas, it has turned out that a high percentage of my customers have been Suzuki teachers using the books to teach their students to read music (see testimonials). That’s how I came up with the idea of introducing a new version more specifically focused on music reading within a Suzuki context.

The result is an aural approach to music literacy that enlists and informs parental participation, while exposing students to a wide spectrum of musical styles. (listen to the 5 Minute Audio Tour) But Music Teaches Reading is actually about a lot more than teaching reading.

What MTR can offer your Suzuki string program:

  • An extraordinarily easy-to-use course in music reading that your students and parents will flip over and that will get the job done with little input from you
  • A quality supplementary repertoire that allows for the integration of violin, viola, and cello players in classes and performances, since all three instruments learn the same music in the same order and the same keys.
  • A substantial body of attractive recital-grade pieces for pre-twinklers.
  • Expanded coverage of technical issues such as discrimination between high and low second finger, fourth finger, G string notes, slurring and hooking.
  • Something for students to do during long breaks from lessons--Since all new material is clearly explained to parents in each lesson, students can progress reasonably well for several weeks, improving reading skills and maintaining interest, without the risk of messing up new Suzuki pieces.
  • A change of pace to help students get through motivational slumps or other problematic situations, such as when a violin student has completed Suzuki Book 3 but is not really ready for Book 4.
  • An alternative for the occasional student who wants to play, but doesn’t relate well to the Suzuki repertoire.
  • An alternative for situations in which a parent does not attend lessons but is nevertheless committed to helping at home.
  • A lot of extra fun and excitement for your students and you.
